CLC Sidewalk Creation
Location: Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center – Bonham, Texas
Client: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Semper Fidelis Construction & Development completed the installation of new pedestrian sidewalks serving the Community Living Center (CLC) at the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Texas. The project was performed to address a critical life-safety concern, as the CLC previously lacked designated sidewalks for safely evacuating patients—particularly bed-bound residents—in the event of an emergency. The work involved constructing multiple concrete sidewalk segments around the facility to provide safe, accessible pedestrian pathways connecting the CLC to surrounding areas of the campus.
Our team performed site assessment and preparation activities prior to construction, including excavation and undercutting of existing soils to achieve the required subgrade elevation for proper sidewalk installation. Formwork was established along the designated sidewalk alignments and reinforced concrete was installed in accordance with project specifications. Each sidewalk section was constructed with a five-inch concrete slab reinforced with 3/8-inch rebar spaced sixteen inches on center to provide structural durability and long-term performance. Expansion joints were installed at tie-in locations, and redwood expansion joints were incorporated at regular intervals to accommodate natural movement and prevent cracking within the concrete system.
The project included construction of five separate sidewalk segments positioned around the Community Living Center to improve accessibility and safe movement around the facility. The sidewalks were constructed with consistent dimensions of six feet in width and included segments measuring approximately 122 feet, 106 feet, 207 feet, 142 feet, and 100 feet in length along various sides of the building, as shown in the project site plan. Following installation, the surrounding areas were restored through topsoil backfilling and site grading, with excess materials properly removed and disposed of to maintain a clean and safe environment.

All work was performed within an active Veterans Affairs medical facility environment and required coordination with facility engineering staff and the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) to maintain safe operations throughout the construction period. Semper Fidelis Construction & Development furnished all labor, materials, and equipment required to complete the project while adhering to federal facility protocols, approved working hours, and VA safety standards to successfully deliver the new pedestrian infrastructure supporting patient safety and accessibility.
